SUBSTANCE ABUSE There's a fine line between regular drug use and drug abuse and addiction. Of course, drug use—either illegal or prescription—doesn’t automatically lead to abuse. What exactly is substance abuse? Excessive use of psychoactive drugs, such as alcohol, pain medications or illegal drugs is Substance Abuse. Risk factors for drug addiction -: • Family history of substance use • Poor parental monitoring • Parental substance use • Family rejection of sexual orientation or gender identity • Lack of school connectedness • Low academic achievement • Peer Pressure • Childhood sexual abuse Warning Signs of substance abuse -: • Bloodshot eyes, pupils larger or smaller than usual • Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing, or impaired coordination • Neglecting responsibilities at school, work, or home • Risk taking when you’re using, such as driving, having unprotected sex • Sudden mood swings, irritability, spaced-out, or angry outbursts • Appears fearful, anxious, or paranoi...
